Deep Impact (1998) The 1998 film became a classic of sorts. The importance of having an emergency plan and being prepared does come through in the film, and that’s a positive thing. We don’t know what size it will be or when it will take place, but we need to be prepared at personal, community and government levels in order to minimise the consequences. We have to prepare for when an earthquake will happen, because it will. At one point, Lawrence (Giamatti) says something along the lines of: “It’s not a matter of ‘there may or may not be an earthquake’, it’s when.” That’s the case with most areas with high seismic activity. What you do really see is the value of preparedness. But I suppose that’s the whole point of this sort of blockbuster Hollywood movie. San Andreas is entertaining and the special effects are amazing, but the chaos and destruction is exaggerated. And that's actually a pretty good barometer for how inventive this movie is.Watch the Guardian Film Show’s verdict on San Andreas – video Guardian Conclusion Of course, that doesn't make the scene any less impressive, but you see it coming a mile away. The second Giamatti's character mentions San Francisco, you're like, "Oh, the Golden Gate Bridge is totally going down in the third act." And sure enough, it totally does. For example, there's obviously a scene where the Golden Gate Bridge gets destroyed, which is kind of a running joke in Hollywood anyway. It's also fairly predictable and unoriginal. Seismologist warns of an impending 12.7 earthquake, no one takes her seriously. But as with most movies like this, the story is pretty thin. San Andreas Quake - When a discredited L.A. Actually, the only way they're even remotely connected is Archie Panjabi's TV journalist, who just so happened to be doing a TV segment on Ray prior to the quake. Scientists like Prentice would love to know when, exactly, the San Andreas had a major quake prior to 1906. At no point does he cross paths with any of them, not even on a grapevine level. While the actor does fine work with what he's given - although that's basically just exposition - Giamatti's storyline is completely unrelated to the family's. Unfortunately, Giamatti's arc amounts to little more than a play-by-play of the events. Art Parkinson (left), Alexandra Daddario (middle) and Hugo Johnstone-Burt (right) in San Andreas As a structural engineer, it worries me slightly that a 7.0 magnitude earthquake would cause the Hoover Dam to fail it should be designed to withstand a larger quake. This is where a lot of the commotion happens, so there's not much room for character growth, but that doesn't stop a forced romantic subplot from creeping into things. In the film, an earthquake destroys the Hoover Dam. Their story is primarily doing the opposite of what the authorities tell them, in the hopes that Ray will come flying in to the rescue. Speaking of which, we also follow Daddario's character, who teams up with a pair of brothers who happen to be in the same building she's in when the first quake hits. (The two were also in Faster together back in 2010.) Overall, their characters are the ones you're rooting for the most, even amidst the other storylines.
